Electricity in Rust for Beginners: Basics & Automatic Turret Setup

Electricity in Rust allows you to fully automate your base: open doors when enemies approach, trigger alarm sirens, run automatic furnaces, and power active defenses. For beginners, the electrical system might seem complicated, but once you master the basic components, you can easily build highly effective setups.

1. Core Power Sources

To run any electrical device, you first need to generate power and store it in batteries:

  • Solar Panel: Generates up to 20 units of power. Output depends directly on the angle of the sun.
  • Wind Turbine: The most efficient power source, generating up to 150 units of power. The higher you place it, the more energy it generates.
  • Large Battery: Stores up to 24,000 units of energy and has a maximum output of 100 units of power. Essential for keeping your systems running 24/7.

2. Important Logic Components

  • Electrical Branch: Allows you to split off a specific, constant amount of power from a main wire. Essential for routing power to individual devices.
  • AND Switch: Passes power only if both input ports receive power.
  • OR Switch: Passes power if either of the input ports receives power.
  • Blocker: Blocks the electrical current flowing through it if it receives power on its side "Block" input.
  • HBHF Sensor: Detects players in its line of sight. Can be configured to detect only enemies, friends, or both. Outputs 1 unit of power per detected player.

3. Tutorial: Automatic Turret Activation Scheme

Keeping turrets turned on constantly consumes a lot of battery power. A smart way is to activate turrets only when a hostile player enters your compound:

  1. Connect your **Wind Turbine** to the power input of a **Large Battery**.
  2. Connect the output of the Large Battery to the input of an **Electrical Branch**.
  3. Configure the Branch output to 12 power units and connect it to the power input of an **HBHF Sensor**.
  4. Mount the HBHF sensor on your external wall facing the gate or compound. Configure it to detect "Exclude Authorized" (so it doesn't trigger on you).
  5. Connect the output of the HBHF sensor to the side "Block" port of a **Blocker**.
  6. Route power from the main line through the Blocker to your **Auto Turret**. When an enemy is detected, the blocker stops receiving the block signal, letting the current pass and turning the turret on instantly.
Warning

Always calculate your total power consumption. Every component (like branches, switches, and blockers) consumes 1 unit of power just to function.
